I've enjoyed all of Terry Gilliam's movies, including the underappreciated Tideland which is "Rated R for bizarre and disturbing content, including drug use, sexuality, and gruesome situations - all involving a child, and for some language."
The movie opens with an intro by Gilliam. "Many of you are not going to like this film. Many of you, luckily, are going to love it....This film is seen through the eyes of a child. If it's shocking, it's because it's innocent....I was 64 years old when I made this film. I think I've finally discovered the child within me. It turned out to be a little girl."
In the commentary track he goes on to explain how difficult it was to find a 10 year old actress who wasn't all dolled up and trying to look and act like a teenager. Jodelle Ferland played the role perfectly handling all sorts of bizarre and painful situations while retaining the innocence of a child. There are also some really sweet moments between her and costars Jeff Bridges and Brendan Fletcher.
Short story long, after watching The Adventures of Baron Munchausen with Sarah Polley and a fairly young Uma Thurman, I highly recommend checking out Tideland.
